Luxembourg City has a lot of unique spots destined to tourist wonder, most of them are museums, as some are already listed in the UNESCO heritage.

Museums

· Musée National d’Histoire et d’Art

Address : Marché-aux-Poissons ( 479 330-1)

Info: The museum’s collections include ancient and modern art, findings from archaeological excavations, objects and documents recording everyday life in the former Duchy of Luxembourg.

· Museum of History of the City of Luxembourg

Address : 14, Rue du St. Esprit ( 479 4500)

Info : The visitor is offered an opportunity to discover the capital’s more than millenary history through its architectural developments, as well as through many aspects of its social and cultural life.

· Deportation Memorial

Address : 3 a, Rue de la Déportation ( 48 32 32)

Info : While the Nazis were occupying the Grand-Duchy of Luxembourg (1940-44), the station of Hollerich, situate a few hundred metres from the main station of Luxembourg, became one of the main centres of deportation. The memorial pays homage to the victims of Nazism.

· Tram and Bus Museum

Address : 63, Rue de Bouillon L-1248 Luxembourg

Info: The visitor comes across exhibits such as a historical horse-drawn coach, old tramway carriages and models of buses as well as historical uniforms.

· National Museum of Natural History

Address: 25, Rue Münster ( 46 22 33-1)

Info: In its new venue in the historical suburb of Grund, this modern family museum highlights “Man”, since human development and impact on nature are illustrated in various rooms dedicated to evolution, ecology and world history. An interactive mutimedia system supplies knowledge relating to natural science. The visitor may access databases which store relevant information about natural landscapes, animal and plant species.

· Wine- and Folklore Museum “A Possen” in Bech-Kleinmacher

The museum is housed in a 17th century vintners house and gives a glimpse of the winegrowers’ way of life and working methods in previous centuries.

Other landmarks:

Cathédrale de Notre-Dame

Address: Bd. Franklin D. Roosevelt (entrance on rue Notre-Dame)

Info: This superb Gothic structure was constructed between 1613 and 1621. It holds the royal family vault and the huge sarcophagus of Count of Luxembourg John I.

Palais Grand- Ducal

Address: Rue du Marché-aux-Herbes 17

Info: This magnificent palace evokes all the opulence of the Grand Duchy’s medieval splendor. The oldest part of this interesting and recently renovated building dates back to 1572.

Casino 2000

Address: Rue Th. Flammang

Info: This is the place for gambling. Attached to the casino is a four-star hotel and multiple restaurants, ranging from buffet-style to serious French, and there are dinner/entertainment specials. A dress code requires jacket and tie (or turtleneck) for men and suitable dress for women, and you must have your passport to prove you’re over 18.

The Casemates

The casemates are a labyrinth of defensive passageways that helped forge Luxembourg’s impressive military reputation. The first underground tunnels were built in 1644, in the era of Spanish domination. The 23-kilometre-long galleries were enlarged forty years later by Vauban, the French military engineer and fortress builder, and in the 18th century by the Austrians. The fortifications and environs are recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
